Metro - Two tales of the Riviera Nayarit

After half a week of not lifting a finger, it was time for us to slip into backpacker mode. A three-hour drive through winding roads overhung with lush leaves brought us to the northern tip of Riviera Nayarit. Here, in a wee fishing town known as San Blas, our next four days had an entirely different rhythm.

Swimming with the fishes - San Blas, Mexico Travel Blog

San Blas is straight out of a sleepy Mexican town movie. Maybe one where the hero arrives and the ladies in swishy dresses swoon in colourfully painted doorways while the local bandidos spit tobacco into the dust at his feet and eye him malevolently...

A 3-day driving adventure through Mexico.

Four hundred miles west of Mexico City, on the Pacific coast, there is a tourist resort city called Puerto Vallarta. Sixty miles north of Puerta Vallarta, at the mouth of the Estero El Conchal River, there is a town called San Blas.

Jacaranda Journey

San Blas is a quaint Mexican fishing village with a small shrimp harbor – its sleepy character belies its major historical importance. Back in the day, (16th-19th centuries) San Blas was the most important pacific port from which Spain launched her fleet of naos (trading galleons with China).

And we just happened to come in the midst of the country's biggest holiday, the 9-day celebration of the Virgin de Guadalupe, so we've seen beautiful, colorful processions and celebrations every night since we got to Mexico a week ago, both in Puerto Vallarta and San Blas.

Rincon Part 4 - Rincon de Guayabitos, Mexico Travel Blog

San Blas is an historical city tracing it´s founding to 1530. There was a fort built there in 1770 and an old church in 1769. San Blas was a busy commercial port in the early years but also famous for launching missions to California and up the coast to as far away as Nootka in Canada.....

My guess is this couple stayed in the Hotel Playa Hermosa  (now defuct) in the early 1980's. Not everybody has the fondest memories of San Blas - here is thier modern account of a trip 20 years ago....

"Even now, 20 years on, guidebooks have little to say about San Blas. This Mexican fishing village might be less scruffy than it once was, but it’s still nowhere your travel agent would know of, let alone recommend..."

lhoriman: San Blas

San Blas is cute. It's the kind of cute that Mazatlán isn't; I liked it immediately, even in the dark. I stopped at the Hotel Bucanero (recommended by my lonely planet guide) and when the desk clerk offered me a discount on two nights I didn't hesitate. 150 pesos each. Then it got crazier....
